The incident occurred in Sullivan County on Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Town of Thompson.
According to Sullivan County Sheriff's Office Undersheriff Eric Chaboty, deputies encountered Xavier Vega, age 30, of Monticello. The investigation at the scene revealed that Vega had been removed from that location earlier in the day under an order of protection.
Vega returned to the residence, allegedly broke in, and assaulted a 61-year-old occupant by knocking his teeth out, Chaboty said.
Deputies arrested Vega and charged him with:
- Burglary
- Assault
- Criminal contempt
- Criminal mischief.
Vega was arraigned before Town of Thompson Judge Richard Baum and sent to the Sullivan County Jail in place of $20,000 bail.
The defendant is due back in court on Monday, Nov. 18.
The victim of the assault was transported by ambulance to Garnet Hospital in Harris, where his condition is unknown.
Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff said that his office and the District Attorney take these charges very seriously.
“We will use whatever means necessary to protect citizens who have orders of protection," Schiff said. "Luckily, in this case, we were not blocked by bail reform."
